Kennebunkport’s “Christmas Prelude” is a magical seaside holiday celebration and a great way to kick off the Christmas season. Prelude will remind you of Christmas’ of the past, when the whole town is transformed with bright lights, bows and boughs and everyone comes together to celebrate this festive time.
Christmas Prelude began in 1982 and has become one of the most popular annual events in Kennebunkport. Visitors from all over the world take part in the Dock Square tree lighting, caroling, holiday shopping, craft fairs, and just come for the festive Kennebunkport holiday decor.
Prelude events include historic house tours, horse-drawn carriage rides, concerts, a Dog Parade and Hat Parade, an Illuminated Labyrinth, Santa arriving in town on a real Maine Lobster Boat!

Travel down a tree-lined road to a clearing, where smoke curls from the chimney of a rustic lodge. Inside, join us for a magical evening as Santa Claus reads ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas to the children, Mrs. Claus leads the children in making their own “gingerbread” houses and elves will help them create sparkling snowflakes. The Kennebunkport Heritage Housing Trust (KHHT) is excited to partner with Vinegar Hill Music Theatre for a holiday music concert! The show will feature local bands performing holiday music to fill the barn with the spirit of the season. We will host a live auction of a few special items during a break between performances during the show. All profits from the event will support the work of KHHT, a nonprofit dedicated to building affordable homes for year-round residents who work, volunteer, raise families, and retire in our great community.
