Road cycling is best early morning ahead of car traffic in Kennebunkport, riding out Ocean Ave you will pass by Parson’s Way, St. Anne’s Church, Walkers Point, Blowing Cave and Thunder Hole, and some splendid seaside mansions too. From Ocean Ave you can continue out to Cape Porpoise on quieter roads. Ride all the way out to The Pier at Cape Porpoise for the best view of Goat Island Lighthouse and watch the fishing boats come and go from the docks. If you are up for more bicycling, continue out to Marshall’s Point- a dramatic seaside neighborhood, then ride along Goose Rocks Beach and on to Biddeford Pool. Another ocean side ride is out Beach Avenue passing Gooch’s Beach, Middle Beach and Mother’s Beach then continuing out Great Hill Road for a quieter seaside neighborhood.
The Eastern Trail is the Kennebunks’ designated recreation path on a gravel non-vehicular road, actually a former train track bed. This is a section of the 65-mile East Coast Greenway that connects Kittery to South Portland, with two access points in Kennebunk: Kennebunk Elementary School off Alewive Road, and Limerick Road in Arundel. The trail is wide, and flat, perfect for cycling and walking (dog friendly). In winter you can even cross-country ski or snowshoe the rec path. The Trail is mostly shaded, it does pass through some neighborhoods.
The Bridal Path is a two-mile dirt path perfect for biking along the pretty Mousam River, with great marsh and river scenery. Watch for pedestrian and pet-walkers along this multi-use trail. You can park at Sea Road School for access or along Route 9 at the Mousam River Bridge (limited parking).
Kennebunkport Land Trust has over 2,300 acres of serene land preserve and recreational paths, with 27 miles of paths maintained for hiking and biking. These are mountain bike style trails located at Emmons Preserve on Gravelly Brook Road – where the KLT headquarters is located, with free parking and access to the trails. There is also an amazing Labyrinth at Kport’s Conservation Trust you should visit during your bike trip. The Kennebunk Land Trust is a great nature preserve and circuit of trails, for walking, hiking and riding. The Trust has over 3,000 acres of forest, fields and waterways, including 1,600 acres of the Kennebunk Plains. Bikers are asked to yield to pedestrians on trails.
