Everyone in Maine has heard about the First Friday Art Walk in Portland. Galleries throughout downtown Portland and the Old Port open their doors, serve light snacks and encourage art lovers to browse their galleries in the early evening. Well, Kennebunk wants Art Lovers and amateurs alike to visit downtown Kennebunk and Kennebunkport on the 2nd Friday during prime summer to see the ever growing number of galleries in this beautiful Maine town, just a few miles from the more famous Kennebunkport. The Art Walk in Kennebunk is Free, and fun for everyone, from 5 – 7pm. Consider it a block party of Art Open Houses. June , July, August, and September the 2nd Friday Art Walk in Kennebunk. Folks are encouraged to walk the Main Street of Kennebunk and visit art galleries including Brick Store Museum, and the Kennebunk Free Library. So you can imagine the Friday Art Walk features art in all shapes and size, mediums and platforms – from traditional art, oils and photography, land, animal and seascapes, to jewelry, pottery, sculpture and baskets, even vintage postcards. Often the gallery owner is the artist, so you meet the source, or the artist attends the Friday Art Walk open house.
During the 2nd Friday Art Walks of the Kennebunks, some galleries offer live entertainment, and light hors d’oeuvres. You can also grab light bite and a cocktail at Old Vines Wine Bar, Pedros, and Ports of Italy in Lower Village Kennebunk. Here you will find more galleries and local Maine boutiques like Maine Art and Maine Art Hill, Gallery at the Grand, Sue Rioux Design, Morph, and Deborah Randall Fine Art, plus many more Kennebunkport art galleries across the Kennebunk River like Mast Cove Gallery, Landmark Gallery, Rusty Fly, F8, True North and Christopher Becker Photography. These galleries are all part of the 2nd Friday Village Art Walk.
If Portland’s Friday Art Walk has become so popular that some galleries can actually get a bit crowded, that hasn’t happened here in Kennebunk …yet. The Kennebunk art scene is just emerging, and the energy of the Art Walks is fresh and fun. Lots of elbow room and enthusiasm amongst the participating artists and gallery owners, and ample free parking throughout town. So enjoy strolling the brick sidewalks and pretty storefronts and shops of downtown Kennebunk and Kennebunkport. Perhaps you will meet the artist of that beautiful painting you’re admiring, and discuss his or her inspiration. What a great way to spend a sultry summer evening in Maine viewing the artwork of local painters, potters and crafts people who have captured the beauty of Maine on canvas, clay or handmade jewelry pieces.
