It’s called the Polar Plunge held every year on January 1 at 11am, brave souls don their bathing suits and dip into the ocean at Gooch’s Beach in Kennebunk Maine (aka Kennebunk Beach). They call it Freezin’ for a Reason, because the proceeds from each swimmers fundraising goes to Caring Unlimited. Polar Plunge participants must donate and raise $25 or more to dip, the top fundraiser is rewarded with a $250 LL Beach gift certificate.
The Polar Plunge is a brisk way to kick off your New Year, and it’s a feel good while freezing event. It’s also a sure cure for a hangover if you partied to heartily on New Year’s Eve. The outdoor temperature was a chilly 25-degrees Fahrenheit on January 1, 2015, with a slight breeze but sunshine on the beach as dozens of swimmers ran in and out of the water.
Kennebunk Beach’s Annual Polar Plunge is at Gooch’s Beach at 11am on January 1 annually, it will be the 15th’s anniversary for this frigid fun fundraiser on January 1, 2016. So mark your calendars and gather your cold courage now. Caring Unlimited offers local support to York County Maine families who have experienced abuse.
